GT start campaign with thrilling win

GT vs MI highlights: Umesh Yadav defended 9 runs in 4 balls as Gujarat Titans (GT) began their campaign in IPL 2024 with a thrilling 6-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Chasing 169, MI finished their innings on 162 for 9.

MI were off to a disastrous start as their opener Ishan Kishan was dismissed for a 4-ball duck by Azmatullah Omarzai in the first over of the innings. Naman Dhir looked good and raced away to 20 off just 9 balls before being dismissed by Omarzai.

It was followed by a 77-run stand between Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis. The duo hit the occasional boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking at a decent pace. At the end of the 10th over, MI were on 88 for 2. With both the batters well set, MI were pretty much on the front foot before Sai Kishore revived his team’s hopes by dismissing Rohit for 43 in the 13th over.

Rohit’s departure was followed by a couple of quiet overs for MI before Mohit Sharma dismissed Brevis for 46 in the 16th over while conceding only 4. In the 17th over, Rashid Khan conceded just three runs. With 36 needed off the last three overs, Tim David and Tilak Varma collected 9 runs from Mohit Sharma’s first five balls in the 18th over before the pacer dismissed the Australian batter on the final ball.

Spencer Johnson began the 19th over by conceding a six on the first ball against Varma but bounced back by dismissing the batter on the very following delivery. On the next three balls, he conceded two singles before dismissing Gerald Coetzee on the last ball.

With 19 needed in the final over, Hardik Pandya began by hitting Umesh Yadav’s first two deliveries for a six and a four. However, the veteran pacer had the last laugh as he dismissed the MI captain and Piyush Chawla on successive deliveries. MI eventually fell short by six runs.

GT vs MI: GT innings:

Earlier in the game, Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant spell with the ball helped MI restrict GT to less than 170 runs. Asked to bat first, the 2022 IPL winners finished their innings on 168 for 6.

Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha made a positive start, adding 27 runs in the first three overs before Bumrah was introduced into the attack. The India pace spearhead castled Saha with a beauty to give MI a much-needed early breakthrough.

It was followed by a 33-run stand between Gill and Sai Sudharsan. Veteran spinner Piyush Chawla broke the stand by dismissing Gill for 31. Sudharsan and debutant Azmatullah Omarzai then took the score past the 100-run mark before MI struck once again to stop GT from getting some much-needed impetus. Gerald Coetzee broke the partnership by dismissing Omarzai for 17.

At the end of the 17th over, GT were on 133 for 3. With a well-set Sudharsan and David Miller at the crease, the home side was looking set to post in excess of 170. However, Bumrah dashed their hopes by dismissing both the batters in the 17th over while conceding only 2 runs. At that stage, even the 160-run mark was looking tough for GT before Rahul Tewatia’s 22-run cameo helped them post 168.
